Barbara Kirschner
In Memoriam
On September 24, 2021, Barbara Kirschner, passed away from a sudden health issue. Our prayers are with her family. Barb contributed so much to our organization, especially as we launched a new program “A Place 4 Matthew” for adults with autism.
For almost two decades Barb’s life was focused on raising twins Jenna and Joshua with her amazing husband Steve. When her twins were born it was one of the happiest days of their lives. They understood early on that Joshua was experiencing developmental challenges. Joshua was diagnosed with Severe Non-Verbal Autism, Anxiety Disorder with OCD features, and presents with Self-Injury and Aggression.
Over the course of many years and steadfast determination, Gwinnett County Schools placed Joshua at Heartspring Residential School in Wichita, Kansas. Heartspring is a renowned leader and innovator in services for children with special needs and their families whose mission is helping them find greater independence. This was a life changing experience for the entire family.
As Jenna begins her life journey in Neuropsychology, Barb was immersing herself in providing a safe Residential Home and happy environment for her son Joshua and others who present with Severe Autistic Behaviors who will age out of the care and protection given to children under 22 years old.
Barb’s life experiences, with degrees in behavioral sciences and forensic psychology from New York City, along with professional counseling/casework and working in corporate America, set her on a journey to provide solutions for families just like hers; who are anything but typical.
Barb was focused on bringing awareness of the critical support needed to help these very special children transition into adulthood, just like Joshua, who are worthy of a safe home and the opportunity to thrive through a new program that UR Worth It created called “A Place 4 Matthew.”
If you wish to support the Kirschner family mission to fund a residential home for Joshua, they have set up a GoFundMe page – https://bit.ly/3laU5sV. Or you can donate to UR Worth It’s program in dedication to Barb’s memory.
